Civil Engineering

Carlile • Macy’s civil engineering group consists of sixteen people; six licensed engineers, four engineers-in-training and six engineering technicians. Their combined experience covers a wide range of civil engineering projects including infrastructure design such as streets and utilities, creek hydrology and storm water management, and most notably subdivision design. Our civil engineering services include:

Utility Design: Our engineers are expert at designing complex water and sewer systems (wet utilities) including large water tanks and pumping systems to service new city water lines, sewer trunk systems and lift stations, feasibility studies and municipal systems analysis. We coordinate with other engineers on the design of joint trench service and other dry utilities. We have provided engineering services for every community in Sonoma County as well as many other North Bay cities and counties.

Streets and Highway Design: Carlile • Macy has been the leader in establishing new street standards that balance the needs of the pedestrian, transit systems and the automobile. The network of urban streets that provides a matrix of vehicular transportation also constitutes the major part of the public realm available to pedestrians. Our engineers have designed thousands of streets within the North Bay area and, as such, have become leaders in traditional neighborhood street design and the renovation of downtown streetscapes. Carlile • Macy is an innovator and leader in the emerging science and art of good street design.

Storm Water Management and Hydrology: The new storm water standards adopted by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System are aimed at better infiltration of storm water on project sites (cleansing) and slowing down storm water before it enters the natural riparian system (detention). Storm water regulations are an evolving science, with Carlile • Macy emerging as an industry leader in the development of new and innovative techniques in the management of storm water on-site. Several of our engineers specialize in creek hydrology and erosion control.

Grading and Drainage: Grading and drainage of projects is closely tied to the survey information, storm water management and hydrology. Grading of sites is a key skill set; when professionally implemented it can save a developer or a community time and money, create aesthetic appeal and interesting environments that the community can be proud of. The drainage aspect of a project is becoming more essential, where water is stored, purified, reused and released in a controlled manner. Carlile • Macy is currently creating innovative techniques for conserving and celebrating this most precious resource – water - and we are emerging as a leader in the field of site drainage.

Subdivision Developments: Subdivision development is a complex field that requires integration of various fields of knowledge and expertise. Carlile • Macy has specialized in this area for decades. A majority of the signature housing developments in Sonoma County have been accomplished by Carlile • Macy. We have a vast wealth of knowledge regarding the Subdivision Map Act – the main legal document that directs the design and implementation of subdivisions in California. We coordinate with various governmental agencies such as Fish and Game, Army Corp of Engineers, local and state water and storm water regulatory agencies, Cal-Trans and various other governing agencies. Carlile • Macy has developed these skills through years of specialization in this very complex area of development.
